The transformative nature of giving isn't always evident in grand gestures; sometimes, it's the steady, unwavering commitment that creates lasting ripples in a community. This is precisely the magic that Rob Baptie and Andrea weave through the HateDust Project in Merced County.

At our first meeting, I sensed Rob's fervor for community engagement. His unique attire contrasted the norm, but it was his burning passion for change that left an indelible mark on me. Andrea is one of the smartest and most genuine people I've ever met, with her undeniable business acumen and dedication, she complements Rob's drive, creating a formidable duo. I just adore these two.

While their contributions span an impressive range, one figure stands out starkly – the donations totaling well into the $100,000s. This may seem like a number, but when translated into real impact, it's monumental. In Merced, where 1 in 4 seniors grapple with food insecurity, Rob and Andrea's contributions have ensured that over 3,000 seniors, our grandparents and neighbors living on fixed incomes, don't have to choose between medicines or food. Hunger is a silent epidemic, making their efforts crucial and life-altering for so many.

One of my most cherished memories with them happened unexpectedly. As we were just getting to know each other, they invited me to participate in a holiday toy drive at Target. Unbeknownst to me, it would be an experience that would deeply touch my soul. I arrived with friends, equally clueless about the day ahead. Rob's simple directive – "Go Christmas shopping" – led to a heartwarming frenzy. Carts piled with toys queued up, ready to spread joy to countless children. The sheer magnitude of their generosity became even clearer when Rob had to clarify with credit card companies about the extensive transactions. Amidst the laughter, there were tears – tears of gratitude, awe, and sheer happiness.

Rob and Andrea don't just donate; they immerse themselves in the essence of giving. From alleviating food insecurity for our senior citizens to ensuring a child's face lights up during the holidays, their contributions are a testament to their monumental hearts. Their journey is not only about the tangible change they're bringing but also about inspiring folks like me to believe that we too can make a difference.

To Rob and Andrea: Your actions, big and small, are reshaping Merced County. Your legacy goes beyond dollars and toys; it's a legacy of hope, love, and community.

My life changed forever when I met the founder of Last Hope Cat Kingdom and visited the facility. The property is the biggest in the area (18 acres or so..) and has a huge, climate controlled cattery. The cattery has 9 separate rooms with windows and screen doors so that the healthy cats can go in and out. There are large yards in the front and back (each of these "yards" are larger than most people's entire property, I might add) which the cats have access to. There are cat trees everywhere as well as fresh food and water everywhere you look. I have been personally very heavily involved with Last Hope for about the last year and have seen the dedication that all involved have to helping animals. I have seen the founder, Renate, drop everything and literally jump into her car and race off to scoop some poor creature off the side of the road and race it to the vet. Last Hope has obtained grants in order to issue low cost spay/neuter vouchers to residents in the county so that we can combat the root of the pet overpopulation problem - too many unaltered animals. Last Hope participated in community events and provides education to the public regarding resources available to them and has assisted other rescues when they have had a need. I really can't say enough about this non profit. If you are ever in the Atwater area, I encourage you to call and schedule an appointment to see the facility and (hopefully) to meet Renate. You will be glad you did.

As you walk into the United Way building on Main Street in downtown Merced, California, you will notice a hand painted quotation above the reception desk. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”- Margaret Mead. I believe that quotation firmly describes the actions of United Way of Merced County as well as its employees and non profits that it supports.
As an intern at United Way I feel truly blessed to be surrounded by people who are so generous with their time and want to make a positive difference in the county we live in. Merced ranks 3rd out of 58 counties in California in poverty and 5th in child poverty, so there is obviously a great need for assistance in our community. United Way of Merced’s mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community. Their focus is on education (pre-school & curriculum development), financial stability/economic development (Earned Income Tax Credit, Financial Training, Job Training, and Economic Development), and health initiatives (Obesity, diabetes and nutrition).
I have been fortunate enough to meet the people behind the non-profits and they are all passionate about what they do. Whether it is feeding the hungry, helping those in our community with low vision and hearing, or just trying to keep their culture alive by educating their youth, it is truly amazing to see how one person can make a difference. One of the most important things I have learned at United Way of Merced is to volunteer! I am not the same person I was before interning here & I can’t be that person anymore. I like to say that I have more time than money and that is truly all you need to volunteer.
